HDFC Global Value Program Review

Using an HDFC credit card abroad can be convenient but the forex markup can quickly reduce the value of any rewards you earn. The HDFC Global Value Program (GVP) is designed to recover a small part of that cost through cashback on eligible foreign-currency transactions.

Visa Power Travel rewards eligible India-issued Visa cardholders across seven countries with base rewards.

The program costs ₹199 + GST per year, but it is not automatically useful for every cardholder. Cashback limits, transaction rules and your overall international spending will decide whether GVP actually saves you money.

How HDFC GVP Works

Once you activate GVP on your primary HDFC credit card, every eligible international transaction made in foreign currency earns 1% cashback.

This cashback is capped at ₹1,000 per statement cycle, so the full 1% rate effectively applies only to the first ₹1 lakh of eligible spending in that cycle.

For example, ₹30,000 of eligible spending earns ₹300 cashback, ₹80,000 earns ₹800, and ₹1.2 lakh still earns only ₹1,000 because of the cap.

The cashback is credited in your next statement cycle. Whether the transaction also earns your card's normal Reward Points depends on that card's own reward terms and the spending category.

If you have several international purchases planned, spreading them across different statement cycles can help you stay within the ₹1,000 cap each time and get the most out of the cashback.

500 One-Time Bonus Reward Points

Apart from cashback, GVP also offers a one-time welcome benefit.

After activating the program, you'll receive 500 bonus Reward Points on your first eligible international transaction.

Keep in mind:

  • Available only once per card.

  • Valid only during the first year of GVP membership.

  • Cancelling and reactivating GVP later won't make you eligible for another welcome bonus.

Annual Travel Voucher

Cardholders who complete ₹1.5 lakh of eligible international spending during one GVP membership year receive a travel voucher worth ₹2,000.

  • Fulfilment timeline: Voucher details are sent by SMS within 90 days of reaching the milestone

  • Frequency: Once per membership year

  • Voucher options: MakeMyTrip, Cleartrip, Yatra or EaseMyTrip

The membership year starts from the GVP activation date and continues until the next renewal date. It does not necessarily follow the calendar year.

A cardholder who spends ₹1.5 lakh across multiple statement cycles, with no individual cycle exceeding ₹1 lakh, could earn ₹1,500 cashback and the ₹2,000 milestone voucher. That gives a total GVP benefit of ₹3,500 before deducting the annual fee.

However, the milestone should be treated as an additional reward on planned spending. Spending extra only to unlock the voucher may not provide meaningful value.

Which Transactions Qualify for GVP Cashback?

GVP cashback applies only when the international transaction is processed in a foreign currency.

Eligible transactions:

  • Purchases made while travelling abroad

  • Overseas hotel or flight bookings processed in foreign currency

  • International subscriptions billed in foreign currency

  • Purchases on overseas websites processed in foreign currency

  • Other eligible online or offline transactions processed in foreign currency

Transactions That Don't Qualify:

  • EMI transactions

  • International transactions processed in Indian rupees (INR)

GVP must be activated on the primary credit card. An activation request placed against an add-on or floater add-on card is not treated as valid, even if an activation confirmation is mistakenly received.

Forex Markup and INR Payments Abroad

GVP does not convert an HDFC credit card into a zero-forex card. The card's regular forex markup continues to apply, along with GST charged on that markup. The 1% GVP cashback only helps offset part of this cost.

One mistake many travellers make is choosing to pay in Indian rupees instead of the local currency while shopping abroad. Although it may seem convenient, it usually works against you. This is called Dynamic Currency Conversion, or DCC.

Transactions processed in INR do not qualify for GVP cashback, even when the merchant is located outside India. Our explainer on forex markup, DCC and other common credit card terms breaks down how these charges work.

Note: Effective 15 May 2026, HDFC Bank also charges a 1.75% markup, plus applicable GST, on transactions processed in INR at an international location or at merchants located in India but registered overseas. Paying in INR can therefore attract an additional charge while also making the transaction ineligible for GVP cashback.

When given a choice, paying in the merchant's local currency is generally the better option. However, a zero-forex card may still work out cheaper, especially when the HDFC card has a high forex markup or offers weak regular rewards.

The actual value depends on:

  • The card's forex markup

  • Its regular reward rate

  • The 1% GVP cashback

  • Any applicable reward exclusions

Before your next trip, check these practical credit card precautions for international travel, including DCC, card controls and safer payment habits.

How Much Must You Spend to Recover the Fee?

The HDFC Global Value Program costs ₹199 + GST per year, which comes to approximately ₹235.

At a 1% cashback rate, approximately ₹23,500 of eligible foreign-currency spending during a membership year is needed to recover the fee through cashback alone.

The first-year welcome Reward Points may help recover the cost earlier, depending on the redemption value offered by the card.

How to Activate HDFC GVP

HDFC Bank currently offers two ways to activate the Global Value Program (GVP).

Activation Through Email

Send a request from your registered email address to support@hdfc.bank.in.

The email should include:

  • Customer Name

  • Registered Email ID

  • Registered Mobile Number

  • Program to be enabled: Global Value Program

  • Annual/Renewal Fee: ₹199 + GST with automatic renewal

  • Aware of product features: YES

Avoid sharing sensitive details such as your CVV, PIN or OTP.

Email may be the more practical option because it gives you timestamped proof of the activation request and a record to reference if the benefits are not credited later.

Activation Through Phone Banking

You can also contact HDFC Bank Phone Banking and request GVP activation on your primary credit card.

You should wait for activation confirmation before making an international transaction, as transactions made before activation may not qualify for GVP benefits.

Renewal, Cancellation and Important Conditions

  • GVP renews automatically every year, and the ₹199 + GST fee is charged on every renewal.

  • The fee and GST can be reversed only if you have not made an international transaction after the latest activation or renewal.

  • Once an international transaction has been made during that membership year, the fee cannot be reversed under this condition.

  • Cancel the program before renewal if you no longer expect to use it.

  • Letting paid benefits renew without checking whether you still use them is one of several credit card mistakes that can quietly reduce your rewards.

  • Your card account must remain in good standing to continue receiving program benefits.

  • If the account becomes delinquent, you will lose access to future benefits. Cashback earned on transactions made before this happened will still be credited.

  • Most queries related to the milestone and other benefits must be raised within 60 days of the fulfilment date.

  • Queries related to cancellation, 1% cashback and the 500 bonus Reward Points may still be considered later if you meet the relevant conditions.

  • Keep your activation confirmation, card statements and spending records until all benefits have been received.

Should You Activate HDFC GVP?

Whether GVP is worth activating mainly depends on how often you make eligible foreign-currency transactions and which card you currently use.

It may be worth activating if you:

  • Make enough eligible foreign-currency transactions to recover the annual fee

  • Travel internationally or pay for foreign-currency subscriptions

  • Can reach the ₹1.5 lakh milestone through planned spending

  • Use an HDFC card whose rewards partly offset its forex markup

GVP may improve the value of an HDFC card, but using different cards for different spending categories can still work better than relying on one card for every payment.

Before activating it, calculate the total value after considering the card's forex markup, regular rewards and GVP cashback. SaveSage helps compare these costs and benefits so you can choose the right card for each international payment.
