SBI BPCL Octane vs RBL IndianOil XTRA for Fuel Spending
If a cardholder spends ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 on fuel every month, the best card is not just the one with the higher reward rate. It also depends on where you usually fill up and how quickly you hit the card's reward cap.

SBI BPCL Octane is better suited to regular BPCL users while RBL IndianOil XTRA offers a higher effective fuel value of 7.5% at eligible IndianOil stations, compared with 6.25% on SBI BPCL Octane at BPCL. At higher fuel spends, splitting the spend across both cards can also help you make better use of their reward caps.

At first glance, RBL IndianOil XTRA looks like the better card. It gives 15 Fuel Points for every ₹100 spent at select eligible IndianOil fuel stations. Each Fuel Point is worth ₹0.50 when redeemed for fuel, giving you an effective fuel reward rate of 7.5%.
There is one important catch. The accelerated 15 Fuel Points per ₹100 is available only at select eligible IndianOil stations. Eligibility depends on the merchant IDs or terminal IDs mapped by IndianOil, which means not every IndianOil outlet will necessarily earn the accelerated rate. This is one reason merchant categorisation can affect whether a credit card transaction earns the expected reward rate. See our guide to How Merchant Categories Affect Your Credit Card Rewards in India.
SBI BPCL Octane gives 25 Reward Points for every ₹100 spent at BPCL. Since 4 Reward Points are worth ₹1, the effective fuel reward rate comes to 6.25%.
So RBL has the higher headline rate. But that is only half the story. Both credit cards put a cap on accelerated fuel rewards, and once that cap is reached, additional fuel spending does not continue earning at the same rate.
What You Earn at ₹10,000 Monthly Fuel Spend
At ₹10,000 of monthly fuel spending, the comparison is fairly straightforward because both credit cards are still within their accelerated reward limits.
With SBI BPCL Octane, ₹10,000 spent at BPCL earns 2,500 Reward Points worth ₹625.
With RBL IndianOil XTRA, ₹10,000 spent at select eligible IndianOil stations earns 1,500 Fuel Points worth ₹750.
At this spend level, RBL XTRA gives ₹125 more in fuel rewards. However, SBI BPCL Octane can still be the better fit if you regularly use BPCL stations.
What Happens When You Spend ₹20,000 on Fuel?
At ₹20,000 a month, the reward caps start to matter much more.
SBI BPCL Octane gives 25 Reward Points per ₹100 at BPCL, capped at 2,500 Reward Points per billing cycle. This means the 6.25% effective fuel value applies only up to ₹10,000 of eligible fuel spending.
RBL IndianOil XTRA gives 15 Fuel Points per ₹100 at select eligible IndianOil stations, with a monthly cap of 2,000 Fuel Points. This works out to roughly ₹13,333 of eligible fuel spending at the accelerated rate.
At ₹20,000 monthly fuel spending, putting the entire amount on one card may leave some of your spend earning at a lower rate after the cap is reached. RBL XTRA can provide up to ₹1,000 in accelerated fuel rewards while SBI BPCL Octane can provide up to ₹625 per billing cycle. Splitting the spend can therefore help you get more value from both cards, provided you already use both fuel networks.
Annual Fees and Waiver Conditions
The annual fees are almost the same, but the fee-waiver thresholds are quite different.
SBI BPCL Octane: The annual fee is ₹1,499 + GST and it is waived after ₹2 lakh of annual spending. At ₹20,000 monthly fuel spending, your annual fuel spend would be ₹2.4 lakh, which is enough to cross the waiver threshold.
RBL IndianOil XTRA: The annual fee is ₹1,500 + GST and it is waived after ₹2.75 lakh of eligible annual spending. At ₹20,000 monthly fuel spending, ₹2.4 lakh of annual fuel spend still leaves you ₹35,000 short of the waiver threshold.
This is worth considering because a higher fuel reward rate can look less attractive if the annual fee still needs to be paid.
How to Maximise Fuel Credit Card Rewards
For a cardholder who already has convenient access to both BPCL and eligible IndianOil stations, using both credit cards can make sense.
For example, if the entire ₹20,000 is split between eligible transactions on both networks:
₹10,000 at BPCL using SBI BPCL Octane: ₹625 in fuel rewards
₹10,000 at eligible IndianOil stations using RBL XTRA: ₹750 in fuel rewards
That gives a total of ₹1,375 in fuel rewards on ₹20,000 of monthly fuel spending. This calculation assumes the transactions qualify for the respective accelerated reward rates and the available reward caps have not already been used during the relevant billing cycle or month.
The strategy works best when both fuel networks already fit into your normal routine. If switching between fuel stations becomes inconvenient, the extra rewards may not be worth the effort.
Important: The headline fuel reward rate does not apply indefinitely. Once the applicable reward cap is reached, additional fuel spending may earn rewards at a lower rate or follow different reward rules. Check the latest card terms before relying on the headline rate for your entire monthly fuel spend.
Fuel Surcharge Waiver
Rewards aren't the only thing to compare. Both cards offer a 1% fuel surcharge waiver but the waiver limits and eligibility conditions are different.
SBI BPCL Octane Fuel Surcharge Waiver
SBI BPCL Octane offers a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on eligible BPCL transactions up to ₹4,000, capped at ₹100 per statement cycle.
SBI BPCL Octane RuPay UPI Condition
Fuel transactions made through the card's RuPay UPI functionality are excluded from the fuel surcharge waiver.
RBL IndianOil XTRA Fuel Surcharge Waiver
RBL IndianOil XTRA offers a 1% fuel surcharge waiver on fuel transactions between ₹500 and ₹4,000, capped at ₹200 per month.
GST on Fuel Surcharge
GST charged on the fuel surcharge is not waived on either card. The surcharge waiver should therefore be treated as an additional saving rather than a flat 1% discount on your entire fuel bill.

FAQs
1. Which is the best fuel credit card for ₹20,000 monthly spend?
SBI BPCL Octane and RBL IndianOil XTRA are both strong options, but the better card depends on where you fuel up. RBL XTRA offers a higher 7.5% effective fuel value at eligible IndianOil stations while SBI BPCL Octane offers 6.25% at BPCL. If both networks are convenient, splitting the spend can potentially earn ₹1,375 in accelerated fuel rewards.
2. Is RBL IndianOil XTRA better than SBI BPCL Octane?
Not for everyone. RBL XTRA offers 7.5% effective fuel value at eligible IndianOil stations, compared with 6.25% at BPCL on SBI BPCL Octane. However, your preferred fuel network and the respective reward caps matter.
3. What is the Fuel Reward Cap on RBL IndianOil XTRA?
RBL IndianOil XTRA gives 15 Fuel Points per ₹100 at select eligible IndianOil fuel stations, with accelerated fuel rewards capped at 2,000 Fuel Points per month. At that earning rate, the cap is reached at roughly ₹13,333 of eligible fuel spending.
4. Does the 1% Fuel Surcharge Waiver Apply to the Entire Fuel Bill?
No. The surcharge waiver has transaction conditions and an overall cap. SBI BPCL Octane caps the waiver at ₹100 per statement cycle while RBL IndianOil XTRA caps it at ₹200 per month. GST charged on the surcharge is not waived. SBI also excludes fuel spends made through the card's RuPay UPI functionality from the waiver.
5. Should You Use Two Fuel Credit Cards for Higher Rewards?
It can be, especially for a cardholder who already uses both BPCL and eligible IndianOil stations. A ₹10,000 + ₹10,000 split can generate ₹1,375 in accelerated fuel rewards when the transactions qualify and the relevant reward limits are still available.
But if managing two cards adds inconvenience or the additional annual fee outweighs the extra rewards, one card may be more practical
